Our Week in Review December 8-14

I originally said that we would do school on 5 days a week - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. But it just seems so natural to do it every day. Most Wednesdays we are at church in the evenings so we don't do it on Wednesday unless we don't go to church for whatever reason (usually lack of gas). Sunday after nap they are always asking to do some work so we just go to it. I really love it and apparently the kids do too.
So needless to say, our week started on Sunday afternoon after nap time.
We did a few things on Sunday

Amarion worked on his copywork. Zi and Niya are both in the HIPPY program and so I took this time to work on them with getting some of their packets done.
Monday was Amarion's 4H Christmas party and so we went to that and they had a great time. After a pizza dinner they made an edible craft which was a rice krispie treat that the decorated using green icing and m&ms. Then they got to make a pine cone bird feeder and then they made a craft for the nursing home. It was a very fun evening. I really enjoy having him in the group. Ours is called the Nature Seekers.

On Tuesday I turned 41 and baby girl turned 2. Yay. Nothing too eventful - I had to work. I did take my lunch and go to town to take cupcakes to the daycare. She had fun celebrating and we got pictures for her memory book.
On Wednesday the homeschool group that I have joined came to my center for a program on eastern bluebirds. I covered some basic information about them and then they made bluebird houses. I had put together a bluebird lapbook for the program and so I put packets together for each child to take home with them to put together later. I can never find lapbooks for the subjects that I need and so I have enjoyed putting together my own. I was so tired and did not want to go to church but we did anyways and it was so refreshing. That was an excellent decision.
I HATE messes. But on Thursday I was VERY brave and purchased Crayola water colors and water color paper and I let the kids paint. I kept telling myself "it's washable, it will come out!" My heartbeat was very erratic and I thought I would surely have to go to the ER before it was over. It was a GREAT experience though. The kids were more fascinated with the colors that the water changed than they were with painting a picture. They really loved it. I am going to have to do it again.

Later Zi and Niya worked on learning the letters in their names and how to spell them. I wrote their names on a piece of cardstock and wrote the letters on craft sticks. I also gave them magnetic letters and they just matched each letter. I would say what the letters were as they played.

The biggest lesson I learned this week is that "being prepared" with my kids means that EVERYTHING is already cut out LOL. We read lots of books and I try to find matching lapbooks for them on homeschool share. I would have everything all ready to go but I would have to cut out some of the things while they waited. Abba laid it on my heart to get everything for each lapbook cut out in the evening so that all we had to do was put them together. This is a lifesaver. I started out reading the same book everyday and doing an activity for it. We read a lot so we usually read about 3 books and do at least one activity for it. I keep everything for each book in its own sheet protector and then when we are done we put the lapbooks together. They really love doing the projects and crafts. After the little kids went to bed I had a special project for Amarion. I had found some Lego sets at Walmart in the clearance for $3. They were Star Wars. He has never done a Lego set before and I was a little leery of trying it.  We got started and I explained to him how to follow the instruction book (he has serious issues with NOT wanting to follow directions). Well he got started and it wasn't coming out right. He did not cry or whimper not one time though. He just looked at the picture and figured it out. By step 15 (out of 17 for part 1 LOL) he finally started using the blue box that showed what pieces to get out and actually following the instructions. Man was I excited. I thought wow Abba, what a wonderful way to teach him to follow instructions. We will definitely be doing more Legos in the future. If nothing else the fine motor skills were worth it. I loved watching his little fingers put those tiny pieces together. He was very proud of himself when he got done. I bragged on him to everybody. He really enjoyed it and I'm glad because I really LOVE Legos and wanted him to like them too.

Friday was our church workers' Christmas party and the kids went to a sitter so we did not have school. We stayed the night in town with their Mimi and on Saturday morning Amarion got to go out and do chores with Mr. Rick (pics to come later cause they're on my phone). He so enjoyed it. He drove a tractor. Highlight of his day! He came in the house after they were done and he had cut his hand. He said momma I cut my hand, but I didn't cry, because cowboys are tough! (I love it)
Saturday morning we went to Lowe's for the kid workshop (which was why we stayed in town - so we wouldn't have to drive that 45 minutes 2 extra times) and the kids made the cutest train (pics to come later because they are on my phone). While they were making their trains Amarion whacked his finger and knocked the skin off of it. Zi says Amarion does it hurt? Amarion says yeah, but I'm not gonna cry cause cowboys are tough. He is such a cute kid. I love love love him. So after we left Lowe's we went to our church because we had an outreach scheduled for today and we served at it. We really had a great week. Looking forward to this next week. We don't have any plans so we should get quite a bit done. Oh yeah - we stayed for church tonight because we have a Saturday service and on the way home Amarion counted all the way to 100 by himself. He was super proud of himself. He said he could do it because he had turned 6 (November 28th). I taught him how to count by 10s while we were driving and he can do it by himself now. He is such a smart boy. Growing up right before my eyes.

Our Week in Review December 1-7

1. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were pretty much a no school day since everyone was feeling bad and ended up going to the doctor and finding out we had 3 strep throats and an ear infection. So 4 babies on antibiotics and a host of other meds.

2. Thursday I went back to work and the kids headed back to daycare. We were under a winter storm watch but we didn't end up getting any bad weather after all. Thursday evening for school Zi and Niya and I played with play dough and they watched me use the cookie cutters and copied everything I did. Then they were pretty confident and took off by themselves making all sorts of "cookies".
Amarion worked on his handwriting with copywork and his letters with handwriting without tears app on the ipad.

3. Friday I went to the library and grabbed several books. We have a huge library of children's books but since I have found the homeschool share page there are a lot of books that I don't have and I love the lapbook activities that they have on there. I read one of the books to them called how many fish and we counted the fish and feet on every page. It was a cute story. The fish got stuck under the bucket and they thought that was sad so they showed me their sad faces which were pretty cute:

I took the opportunity to talk about our emotions and the showed me their angry faces:

Funny babies.

4. Saturday morning I was up pretty early and found a really cool blog and made a catapult in about 10 minutes with stuff from around the house. AWESOME!

5. Saturday was a busy day for us. I debated back and forth whether to take them to Home Depot for the kid workshop and then finally gave in just because I knew we would not get out of the house at all today if I didn't. So we bundled up and headed out. They really enjoyed making their tic tac toe game:

A friend of ours from church was there with her kids and she helped Amarion make his. A lady that was next to us helped Zion. So I only had to help Niya and baby girl. This was a blessing because trying to do projects like this with 4 littles is difficult. It made it so unstressful for me.

6. After nap on Saturday we started with school - Zi and Niya had some scissor practice time:

Niya was a typical 3 year old and did not cooperate in the beginning - but was very cooperative after 4 minutes on the reflection stool:
7. Amarion is really getting the hang of copywork and works really hard to make it very neat.
8. I read books with Zi and Niya and they loved the I Spy book:

9. Amarion's assignment was to write 3 sentences using sight words and draw a picture to go with it. He did really great. He spelled horses by himself and spelled it correctly - it is not one of his sight words. He spelled awesome "osm" which is really cute because when you sound it out, that is what you get.

10. We read a cute story Jesse Bear What Will You Wear and did a couple of activities for our lapbooks for it:

11. Zi and Niya learned how to play the game Cooties and loved it:

Niya won! Zi and I both needed one more piece.

12. I hid 5 bears around the living room for Zi and Niya to play hide and seek. They found the first 3 right off. Zi found the 4th one and then we played hot or cold to help them find the last one. It was laying on the windowsill. They walked over to that area several times and never looked up. Zi finally found it.

13. I needed some time to get our dinner done and on the table so I challenged them to build a tower with our cans - I save all the cans from our can goods and they love to play with them:

Niya was very successful at getting hers pretty tall about 2 or 3 times (baby girl kept kicking it over). Zi got a little frustrated because his would fall over when he added the 4th can.

14. After bible and our advent, the littles all went to bed and Amarion and I got to spend some time together. He learned how to skip count by 2s, we covered lesser and greater, and we played a new game that I found on another blog called 1-2-3 Spell It:

Then he got to choose what game we played next (I put all the games that we have made for him on popsicle sticks and he gets to choose one):

However, he really wanted to play the sight word yahtzee game that I made up so we ended up playing that and then we played sight word pancakes.

What a busy week. They are all looking forward to tomorrow because we light the 2nd advent candle.
Next week we have our 4H Christmas party on Monday and Lowe's has their kid workshop on Saturday. I really want them to go to that one because they are making a train.
